This gentle countryside with its ripening vineyards, fertile fields, the wide, shallow Loire and its pretty tributaries, is truly the 'Garden of France'. The many colourful markets display a vast array of fresh local produce, particularly river fish such as pike and salmon, succulent asparagus and of course, some of thelocal tastiest wines. The main attraction of the area is the many Renaissance chateaux with their turrets and towers, steep grey slate roofs and astonishing gardens, the jewel of them all being Chenonceaux with its elegant arches spanning the River Cher.
